Take our poll: What will funerals be like in the year 2050

What will funerals be like in 2050?
Working with a funeral professional to create a traditional clergy-led service for my loved one.
A casual Celebration of Life, with plenty of my loved one's favourite music, food and drink.
A high-tech event in which my loved one is cryogenically frozen for revival at a later date.

By 2050, the world will certainly have changed. For starters, there will be many more of us. According to the United Nations, the current world population of 7.2 billion is projected to increase by 1 billion over the next 12 years, and reach 9.6 billion by 2050. And we’re getting older. About 1.53 billion, or 16 percent, of the world's people in 2050 will be 65 and older, estimates the U.S. Census Bureau.

But predicting how science and technology will change our world is more difficult.  Scientists are forecasting great advances in cures and vaccines for many diseases, from HIV to cancer.  Lab-grown “replacement parts” will be a boon for transplant patients.  And in  the quest for immortality, by 2050 some scientists believe our brains could be uploaded to a computer, so that we can live on via a robotic body or even as a hologram.

However, our growing, aging population also means that, by 2050, the number of people around the world living with dementia is expected to triple, rising from 36 million people to a staggering 115 million people, according to the World Health Organization.

How will we say goodbye to our loved ones in 2050? Will we continue to hold traditional funeral services? Will more of us opt for an informal celebration? What about advances in the quest for eternal life – will that change how, or even if, we say goodbye? Take our poll and let us know what you think! We’ll report back on the poll results in a future blog post.
