National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week

Today in Canada, there are more than 4,300 men, women, and children waiting for a lifesaving, medically urgent organ transplant.

While everyone has the potential to be an organ and tissue donor, the reality is that donation is quite rare. On average, 2 to 3 per cent of hospital deaths happen in a way that allows someone to become an organ donor. In fact, the opportunity for organ donation is so unique that you are five times more likely to need an organ transplant during your lifetime than you are to donate.

“Every day, Trillium Gift of Life Network works to save lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation - but this is only possible because a family has made the choice to consent to giving the gift of life,” says Ronnie Gavsie, TGLN President and CEO. “It is an incredibly challenging time when someone passes.  If families have already discussed donation, the burden of decision-making is lifted. The family knows they are fulfilling their loved one’s last wish.”

When a family has proof that their loved one registered their consent, they almost always reaffirm their decision to give the gift of life. Without this knowledge, families consent only half of the time.

This National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, which is April 17-23, register and talk to your family – it has the power to save a life. Visit www.organsandtissues.ca/donate to find out how to register for organ and tissue donation in your province or territory.
